Howard Memorial Shelter

The Howard Memorial Shelter was built in 1922 to commemorate George James Howard and his wife. He died in 1911 and was the 9th Earl of Carlisle, of Naworth Park. His wife, Rosalind Frances, died in 1921. The Howards had closed all the public houses on their Yorkshire and Cumberland estates because of their Temperance ideals.

 Edward Memorial

 Edward I died on the English side of the Solway, on 7th   July 1307, on his journey to fight the Scots. Thomas   Langstaffe built a monument in 1685 that was destroyed   in a flood, but it was replaced by a 20ft pillar in 1803.

Dalemain Apple House

Described as a 16th century Apple House, the building at the end of the garden may have been the little grotto or summerhouse dating back to 1688, when Sir Edward Hasell had the terrace wall built.

The Greystoke Pillar is an obelisk that was built in the late 18th century for the 11th Duke of Norfolk.

Bunkers Hill

Bunkers Hill was the site of a battle during the American War of Independence. Charles Howard, the Duke of Norfolk had the building erected in about 1789 to annoy his Tory Neighbour, the Earl of Lonsdale. Francis Hiorne may have been the architect, as he was staying at Greystoke in 1787 to discuss repairs to Arundel Castle where he had built Hiorne's Tower.

Fort Putnam

Fort Putman was built in the late 18th century for the 11th Duke of Norfolk. It commemorated the American War of Independence and resembled a fort. 

It was named after General Israel 'Puffing' Putnam. The building is a screen with Gothic windows around a farmhouse. There is a stable block at Hope End in Hereford that has similar features.

The earlier building was restored in the mid 19th century by Anthony Salvin for Henry Howard.

The two gazebos at Newby Demesne Farmhouse were probably built when the building was altered by Smirke in the 1840s.

Lyulph's Tower

In the lat 18th century, Charles Howard, the 11th Duke of Norfolk, had a hunting lodge built in the Romantic Gothick style, on the site of a 13th century Pele tower. 

​Lyulph was a Viking who is said to have given his name to Ulph's Water which became Ullswater.

Muncaster Monument

The 65 feet high Muncaster Monument was probably built in the mid 18th century. It is said to be where shepherds found Henry VI after he was defeated in battle.

Beacon

There has been a beacon at Beacon Pike since 1296 to warn of Scottish raiders.

The monument on the 937ft hill was built in 1719 and repaired in 1780.

Caroline Cottage

Built in 1818, Caroline Cottage was named after the youngest daughter of the Earl of Lonsdale.

The octagonal dovecote at Hutton in the Forest was built in about 1700 and is similar to the ones at Wreay Hall and Barrock Park.

Grune Point Pill-box

The pill-box is known as a 'Cumberland Machine-Gun and Anti-Tank Emplacement'. It is built using bags of concrete.

The pyramid on the top was added as a memorial to four firemen from Silloth who were drowned trying to rescue a wildfowler. It was later found to be a false alarm.

  St Ninian's Well

  The wellhead at Brisco was designed by Sarah Losh in     the 1830s or 40s. Sarah, her sister and her uncle went     on the Grand Tour in 1817.

  Rickerby Hall Tower

  
The three-storey octagonal tower was built in about   1835 for George Head Head (he must have thought that   two 'Heads' are better than one!). He was mayor,   magistrate and banker and owned Rickerby House.

  The North Lodge to the former Rickerby House was built   in about 1835 for George Head Head.

  Stone Circle

  The stone circle in Rickerby Park was erected in 2011 by   the Eden River Trust. There are seven upright stones of   Cumbrian rock: Shap limestone, Penrith sandstone,   millstone grit, Kirkstone slate, Lazonby sandstone and   Shap granite.

  Eden Bridge Gardens

  Although the gardens were known locally as the   'Chinese  Gardens', they were designed by Prentice   Mawson in an Italianate style. They were built in the   early 1930's by Percy Dalton, Carlisle City's Engineer.

West Lodge Archway

West Lodge was the former lodge to the now demolished Crofton Hall and was probably built in 1826 for the Brisco family. The grounds of the estate, that included 142 acres of gardens, were laid out by Sir John Brisco from 1770 to 1775.

Inscribed over the doorway of the old dairy is 'E.&E.H. 1709' but the building has been considerably altered in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The chimney was presumably part of the Wellington Pit; sunk in 1840 and closed in 1933.
