HIPSWELL, North Riding

Hipswell Hall                                                           SE 188 984

Picture
Hipswell hall is believed to be the birthplace of John Wycliffe in the 14th century.

The west range was the 15th century fortified manor house of the Fulthorpe family. The tower is dated 1596.

It has been altered considerably since Samuel Buck sketched it in about 1718. It became a farmhouse in the mid 19th century and was reduced in size.

The two gate piers are 17th century.
