THIS STRUCTURE IS ONE OF THE FEW VILLAGE
POUNDS (OR PINFOLDS AS THEY WERE SOMETIMES
CALLED) STILL REMAINING. FROM THE MIDDLE
AGES UNTIL THE END OF THE 19TH CENTURY MOST
VILLAGES AND SMALL TOWNS HAD SUCH AN
ENCLOSURE WHERE STRAYING ANIMALS OR TRESPASSING
CATTLE WERE CONFINED IN THE CUSTODY OF A
PARISH OFFICIAL CALLED A PINDER OR PINMAN
UNTIL THEY WERE REDEEMED BY THEIR OWNER.
THIS EXAMPLE PROBABLY DATES FROM THE 18TH CENTURY.
