MIDDLEHAM, North Riding
Crenellated gable
Castellated Bridge SE 119 887
Joseph Aloysius Hansom built the bridge in 1829 and it is one of the country's earliest suspension bridges. The design, however, had faults and it collapsed the following year when a herd of cows crossing it caused it to vibrate. After being repaired in 1831, a toll was charged. The cast iron girders replaced the suspension chains in 1865.
Hanson was not only the inventor of the hansom cab but the founder of The Builder magazine.
