At the end of the 14th century, William de Newbold was prior of Bridlington and it is recorded that, 'In consequence of the maritime attacks of the pirates, who infested the North Sea, The property of the prior and convent became so insecure that Richard II granted them licence to enclose and fortify the priory with walls and gates'.
