St Lawrence Chapel                                            NZ 163 161

Picture
St Lawrence Chapel was built in the 12th century on the instructions of Roald, the local landowner, who gave 25 acres of land and orders 'for a priest to sing in his chapel at Bereford on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays, for ever'. It may have served as a hospital.

In the 16th century, the nave was made into a priests house, and it was a farmhouse until the 18th century. The north wall fell down in the 19th century and the cross wall in the 1960s.

The deserted medieval village of Barforth is sometimes called Old Richmond on maps.
