MIRFIELD, West Riding
Dumb Steeple SE 178 210
The square stone column was probably built in the late 18th century and may have replaced a standing stone that marked the boundaries of the parishes of Clifton, Mirfield and Hartshead.
It may be called the Dumb Steeple because there are no bells or the Dumb Steeple at Grange Moor may have had an influence on the name. It originally stood at the centre of the crossroads but was moved in the 1980s because of the amount of traffic. |
